It came in on a Tuesday in Q1 2024. A job shop owner in the Midwest forwarded me an email with the line: 'Need an 80-ton used Amada press brake by the end of the month. Budget is around $50,000. Can you inspect one tomorrow?'
I am the quality and brand compliance manager at a used metal fabrication equipment dealer. That means every machine we list, and most machines we consider buying, goes through my review before it reaches a customer. In four years I have reviewed more than 200 machines. In 2024 I rejected about 14 percent of the first candidates we saw, mostly for control problems, worn hydraulic systems, or documentation that did not match the actual build.
The question sounded simple. By the end of the day, it was not.
So What Is a CNC Press Brake, Really?
Before I walk you through the inspection, we need to be clear about the machine itself. If you look up 'what is a cnc press brake,' most definitions say it is a machine that bends sheet metal with a punch and die using computer control. That is true, but incomplete.
A manual press brake bends the same way physically. The difference is that a CNC press brake controls the process instead of relying on the operator to babysit it. The machine we went to see was an older Amada RG-80 press brake, 80 tons, with a claimed four-axis CNC retrofit. The photos made it look almost new. The dealer's description said 'new controls, low hours, ready to work.'
I have heard that line before. On the first walk-around, though, I was impressed. The paint was original. The hydraulic oil was clear, not milky. The ram showed no scoring. When I ran the ram to the bottom of its stroke without tooling, it moved smoothly. No knocking. No obvious leaks.
Then I did what our inspectors do on every prospective purchase: I asked the operator to make a simple 90-degree bend in 10-gauge steel. Not a tight tolerance. Not an exotic material. A normal bend that any press brake should do without drama.
The machine made the bend. Fine. Then I asked the operator to set the backgauge to 2.00 in, make another part, automatically move to 4.00 in, and make a third part without anyone touching the control. The backgauge did not move by itself. The operator pressed a button, waited, and finally nudged the machine with a manual pulse. It worked, but only because he was driving it. The so-called CNC control was not driving the back gauge at all.
The dealer said it was a loose encoder cable. Maybe, I said. Let's check the diagnostic page. After enough poking, the truth came out: the machine had originally been sold as a manual press brake. Someone later added an aftermarket display and a servo drive to the backgauge, but the two systems were never fully integrated. The controller could show a coordinate on the screen; it could not execute the coordinate automatically.
In other words, it was a manual press brake with a screen attached. That is not what the ad meant to say.
Why We Walked Away
I rejected the machine. Not because Amada is a bad old press brake brand. Amada makes excellent machines when they are cared for, and the mechanical condition of this one was genuinely good. I rejected it because the claim did not match the performance. The buyer would have brought this machine home expecting repeatability and instead would have lost time checking every flange by hand. For a shop with one machine and a hard deadline, that is not a small inconvenience. It is the whole game.
The buyer was not happy. He kept saying 'the price is under budget, and mechanically it's solid.' He was right about both. The upside was saving a large amount versus a new equivalent. The risk was that every batch produced with that machine could consume the savings in rework. I told him the same thing I tell every customer: if this is your only machine, buy the machine that makes your first part correct, not the machine that makes the salesman happy.
Honestly, I don't know whether the seller intended to mislead us or simply had never run a full program cycle after the retrofit. I suspect it was the second. The Fix and the Purchase
Two weeks later the seller called back. A local retrofit shop had actually wired the axis properly. They replaced the damaged encoder cable, installed two proximity switches, and spent a day setting up the parameter file. The seller invited us back for a new test.
This time I ran it harder. I asked for 30 test parts in three programs, with different backgauge positions and bend angles. I measured every tenth part. The machine held flange position within plus or minus 0.004 in and bend angle within plus or minus half a degree. Not exactly lab-grade metrology, but respectable for a 20-year-old Amada RG-80 in a job shop.
I still did not relax after we sent the deposit. The risk was not the mechanics. It was the controller integration. Retrofits can be good, but they are only as good as the person who wrote the parameter file. I kept imagining the machine shutting down in the middle of a 500-part order because of a ground loop I had missed. The first month of production would tell us the truth.
It ran. The machine was installed two weeks later, and as of my latest annual review it has produced over 40,000 parts without a control failure. I am not holding that up as a guarantee. I am telling you because the difference between a bad used press brake and a good used press brake is often not the brand. It is the verification process.
What I Tell Shops Looking for Used Amada Press Brakes for Sale
My experience is mostly with mid-tonnage Amada press brakes, RG and similar models between 80 and 220 tons, used by contract fabricators in the United States. If you are buying a 600-ton servo press brake for aerospace, or a used machine that has been through a flood, my perspective will only take you so far. Please get an independent service technician involved.
That said, here are the patterns I have seen:
- Buy the machine you can verify, not the one with the lowest price. A used Amada press brake can still be a precision tool after 20 years, but if the control was added by someone who understood only mechanical installation, you are buying a project.
- Ask direct questions about axes: which CNC axes actually move automatically in program? The control may advertise eight axes, while only Y and X are wired and the rest are manual adjustments. That is a different machine, and it deserves a different price.
- Ask for a test with your parts, not the seller's parts. Bring flat blanks cut from the same material you run and measure the output. A machine that cannot hold tolerance on a simple 90-degree bend will not magically improve on your harder jobs.
The phrase 'CNC press brake' is not just a sales label. It means the machine can execute bending sequences automatically, with controlled ram depth and backgauge positioning. If those motions do not happen without an operator pushing buttons, it might still be a fine manual machine, but it is not the machine in the ad.
An Honest Note About Unrelated Machine Searches
I would like to clear up two terms that sometimes show up in the same search history as 'amada press brake.' First, an automatic oil injection cnc slant bed lathe is a turning machine. It is built for cylindrical parts, bar work, and components that need rotation; it is not built for bending sheet metal. Would I Buy Used Again? Yes, With Limits
I recommend used Amada press brakes for one kind of buyer well: an established shop with someone who can run acceptance tests, with enough cash reserve for maintenance, and with moderate tolerance requirements. If your business depends on one machine, and a week of downtime would destroy your payroll, the savings from used equipment may not be worth the risk. In that situation, new equipment with factory support is not a luxury. It is insurance.
People often think used precision equipment is a bargain until it fails. I think the exact opposite. A used Amada press brake can be an incredible bargain if you inspect it with the same skepticism you would use for a 10-year-old airplane. High precision is not a characteristic of the brand; it is a characteristic of the specific machine's condition, history, and control integration.
There is no such thing as the perfect used press brake for every shop. There is only the machine that passes your tests, and the machine that costs less but does not. If your situation fits what I described, a verified used Amada press brake can make you money for years. If it doesn't, buy new and sleep well. Both choices are legitimate. The only bad choice is buying a story instead of a machine.
